My Social Canvas had the pleasure of visiting the GLAM Girls Club at a local school in Harlem this week. GLAM Girls is comprised of fifth grade girls, and GLAM stands for Girls Learning to Achieve More. We have previously visited the GLAM Girls club to tell them about our mission and connect with the members. MSC was so excited to be able to visit the girls again, this time for their t-shirt design competition!
The girls in the club were asked to craft a t-shirt design that embodied GLAM and MSC’s mission of empowering women and girls to be the best they can be. Then, the t-shirt designs, along with a brief explanation from each young designer, were judged by a panel comprised of influential women and girls such as MSC’s own Lisa Mayer, teen health activist, chef, and motivational speaker Haile Thomas, and Michelle Luis, from Elle Magazine!
All of the shirts were fantastic, and every design uniquely embodied the message of female empowerment. The designs were narrowed down to three finalists: Isabel, Fatoumata, Natalie and Diamilatou. Check out some of the designs below!
From that, the winner was selected-- Fatoumata! Fatoumata’s design says “Be Your Own Beautiful.” She described her motivation behind the design with this statement: “‘Be your own beautiful!’ This is something not many girls say but I am going to change that. Girls are supposed to empower each other to be confident in who they are. We must empower each other to be ourselves, love ourselves, and be true to who we truly are.”
We love Fatoumata’s design, and especially the message behind it! Fatoumata’s design will be featured on a special t-shirt that will be given to the GLAM Girls Club, and it will also be available for purchase on MSC’s website, with a percent of proceeds supporting GLAM Girls.
It was so inspiring to see such young girls encouraging each other and sharing their creations. Many of the designs revolved around celebrating individuality, embracing natural beauty, and empowering other girls. We loved seeing these girls express themselves and further the My Social Canvas mission of supporting women and girls to design the life they love!
